Interpretive Summary: In 2002 we investigated CrylAc levels in overwintered volunteer Bt cotton plants (NuCOTN 33 B) and determine its effects on Pink bollworm (PBW) and Tobacco budworm (TBW) larval mortality. DPL 5415 and NuCOTN 33 B cotton seeds were planted in 7 rows wide x 18 m long plots at the Western Cotton Research Laboratory, Phoenix, AZ on 29 Apr 2002. Overwintered volunteer plants ofBt and DPL 5415 cotton were found randomly occurring in the 1 ha experimental field. Both Bt and DPL 5415 overwintered volunteer cultivars had been defoliated on 1 Nov 2001 and stalks cut on 15 Ian 2002. We tagged the overwintered volunteer plants and incorporated them into the current years experiment to compare CrylAc toxic protein levels in leaves, flower buds, and bolls trom overwintered volunteer plants with the toxic protein levels in cotton leaves, flower buds, and bolls trom plants arising trom seed planted in 2002. The experiment was conducted as a CRD with four observations of volunteer and annual seeded cotton of each cultivar. Standard grower practices were used during the 2002 season and cottons were irrigated every 14 days from 3 May to 27 Aug, 2002.
