Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The glassy-winged sharpshooter (GWSS) is a major pest of grapes, almonds and other woody crops due to its ability to vector Pierce's Disease of grapes, a bacterial pathogen, Xylella fastidiosa. New developments in molecular biology and virology have opened the use of insect viruses as molecular tools to examine gene function within insect systems. Viruses also present a new avenue for development as potential microbial control agents for use as 'next generation'methods in insect management strategies.
