Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: A brief overview of the history and metabolic pathway of the classical acetone-butanol-ethanol (ABE) fermentation will be presented. This will be followed by a description of recent developments in Clostridium beijerinckii strain development and characterization, including recent work on genomic sequencing. With respect to the downstream aspects of the ABE fermentation, we will discuss fermentation optimization and process integration approaches with the ultimate goal of scale up and commercialization of this fermentation process.
