Available: http://www.ars.usda.gov/ba/bhnrc/fsrg Interpretive Summary: New nationwide dietary intake data for the years 2001-2002 are now available for public use. The data are the product of full integration of two nationwide dietary intake surveys--the Continuing Survey of Food Intakes by Individuals (CSFII), conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), and the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), conducted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). The new integrated survey is called What We Eat in America, NHANES (WWEIA, NHANES) and is conducted as part of NHANES. The documentation and data files from WWEIA, NHANES 2001-2002 are available for free download on the Internet. The data include food and nutrient intakes for 9,701 individuals. These data are used by Federal and State level decision makers and researchers in such tasks as monitoring the nutritional adequacy of U.S. diets, measuring the impact of food fortification on nutrient intakes, estimating exposure of population groups to contaminants, and developing dietary guidance and related programs. The availability and accessibility of the WWEIA, NHANES data will also benefit researchers in industry and academia, as well as students. Another valuable feature is that the dietary data can be linked with other NHANES data to investigate relationships between dietary intakes and health status. Technical Abstract: New nationwide dietary intake data for the years 2001-2002 are now available for public use. As of 2002, dietary survey operations of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) became fully integrated in What We Eat in America (WWEIA), National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Because NHANES is on a 2-year data release cycle, the current release includes dietary data collected in NHANES 2001 along with that from WWEIA, NHANES 2002. The dietary interview data are in 2 files. The Individual Foods File (DRXIFF_B) contains information about each food eaten by each respondent (interview day of week, eating occasion name and time of day, food code, amount eaten in grams, amounts of energy and 60 nutrients, and combination code). The Total Nutrient Intakes File (DRXTOT_B) contains daily aggregates of total energy and nutrients, information about water intakes, and fish and shellfish consumption for selected sex-age groups. The documentation files give a brief overview of WWEIA, NHANES and include information on the contents of the two data files, eligibility and exclusions, the examination protocol, quality control procedures, data processing and editing, and analytic notes.
