Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The objective of this study was to identify new sources of corn germplasm for improving drought tolerance and insect resistance. Seventy-one tropical x temperate GEM breeding crosses were grown under well-watered and two drought stressed conditions in Lubbock, TX in 2003 and 2004. The ear penetration by corn earworm (CEW) larval was measured from ear tip toward the base and used as an indicator of earworm resistance. Over two years, DK888:N11a, DKXL380:N11a, BR51501:N11a, ANTIGO1:N16, CUBA84:D27, CML329:N18, SCROGP3:N411a, DK212T:N11a, BG07040:D27, and ANTIGO03:N12 had the lowest CEW penetration, while CH04030:N0306, GOQUEEN:N16, AR01150:N0406, AR17026:N1013, and SCRO1:N110 had the highest CEW damage. The average percentage of molded kernels was highly correlated with CEW penetration (r = 0.70**). The following crosses yielded well and shown good stay green under drought stressed conditions: ANTIGO03:12, AR16026:N12, AR03056:N0902, AR17056:N13, CML329:N18, GUAD05:N06, BR51675:N0620, CHIS775:1920, BARBGP2:N08a18, and SCROP3:N1411a, UR13085:N0215. These GEM breeding crosses can increase the genetic diversity and provide useful genes for stress tolerance.
