Meeting Abstract. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Hybridization plays a crucial role in ornamental plant breeding as a source of variation and a means for transferring desirable traits between species. However, several types of incompatibility barriers exist and often prevent breeders from fully taking advantage of the possibilities offered by hybridization. The objective is to use several techniques, including embryo rescue, somatic hybridization, polyploidization, and plant transformation (genetic engineering) to circumvent hybridization barriers and develop new hybrid plants with improved ornamental characteristics. A brief description of the techniques used and some preliminary results are presented. |
