Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Papaya ringspot virus causes the most important viral disease of papaya worldwide. The three major efforts to control virus through breeding are: development of virus resistant transgenic papaya, resistant transgenic papaya, intergeneric hybridization to incorporate resistant genes into papaya, and tolerance breeding. In 1998, papaya ringspot virus resistant transgenic papaya was commercialized in Hawaii and has successfully controlled the virus. This review summarizes the development of transgenic papaya for Hawaii and other regions of the world, the progress of efforts with intergeneric hybridization, and the successful development of tolerant cultivars for Thailand. This is the first review to recently cover all three approaches for controlling papaya ringspot virus.
