Citation: Rodgers Iii, J.E. Specific research and quality issues for cotton utilization. CD-ROM. Memphis, TN. National Cotton Council Beltwide Cotton Conference. 2005.

Interpretive Summary: U.S. cotton is being severly challenged in the global marketplace in its efforts to maintain its leadership position in quality, marketing, and global utilization. Intense international competition and pressure-quality, marketing, political-is being directed at U.S.cotton, primarily from the Far East(e.g.,China),Latin America (e.g., Brazil), and Southwest Asia (e.g., India and Pakistan). In order to effectively compete in the global environment and to increase the utilization of cotton, the cotton industry-breeder, ginners, manufacturers, marketers, research institutions, government, etc.-must maximize its research and quality initiatives to deliver cottons and cotton products with the required quality and market-specified properties. An overview is presented with specific examples of potential, on-going, or commercialized research and quality activities, directions, and emphases that could lead to increased cotton utilization, improved quality, and improved global competitiveness. These selected research and quality efforts can be divided tinto three categories-Products, Processabiltiy, and Qualitity Measurements. "Products" discusses both new products and novel applications and utilizations of existing products. In "Processability," current initiatives both to characterize the operational processing of the fiber and to improve its rapid, accurate quality determination are reviewed. "Quality Measurements" explores research and potential applications of leading-edge and updated analytical and engineering systems for laboratory, "at-line," and "on-line" quality measurements.

Technical Abstract: U.S. cotton is being severely challenged in the global marketplace in its efforts to maintain its leadership position in quality, marketing, and global utilization. Intense international competition and pressure'quality, marketing, political'is being directed at U.S. cotton, primarily from the Far East (e.g., China), Latin America (e.g., Brazil), and Southwest Asia (e.g., India and Pakistan). In order to effectively compete in the global environment and to increase the utilization of cotton, the cotton industry'breeder, ginners, manufacturers, marketers, research institutions, government, etc.'must maximize its research and quality initiatives to deliver cottons and cotton products with the required quality and market-specified properties. An overview is presented with specific examples of potential, on-going, or commercialized research and quality activities, directions, and emphases that could lead to increased cotton utilization, improved quality, and improved global competitiveness. These selected research and quality efforts can be divided into three categories'Products, Processability, and Quality Measurements. 'Products' will discuss both new products and novel applications and utilizations of existing products. In 'Processability,' current initiatives both to characterize the operational processing of the fiber and to improve its rapid, accurate quality determination will be reviewed. 'Quality Measurements' will explore research and potential applications of leading-edge and updated analytical and engineering systems for laboratory, 'at-line,' and 'on-line' quality measurements.
