Meeting Abstract. 1:01/05/2005 Interpretive Summary: N/A Technical Abstract: The distribution and habitats of all 27 Chaetocnema species in the Eastern Europe and the Caucasus is described. The principles and terminology used for classification of species ranges, habitats and zonal features in their distribution are defined. The territory of eastern Europe and the Caucasus has no endemics among Chaetocnema species. The species occurring there have generally large ranges of three general kinds: Transpalearctic ranges (3 species), Westcentral Palearctic (15 species), and Western Palearctic ranges (9 species). Different areographical groups have a different fate from one zone to another. Species with the largest ranges are distributed throughout all the Russian Plain, but compose the majority in poor faunas (tundra, semidesert, desert). Species with european ranges are numerous in the deciduous forests, forest steppe and the Carpathians. They disappear in the steppes and the desert. Only a few of them are present in Crimea and the Caucasus. Species whose ranges also cover east Mediterranean and/or Middle Asia are most numerous in the steppes, semidesert and desert; they compose most of the desert fauna. Their representation in boreal zones and mountains, even in the Caucasus, is comparatively small. |
