Total antioxidant activity of florida's tropical fruit using the dpph and orac assay. American Chemical Society National Meeting. Paper No. AGFD 139. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: The antioxidant activity in twelve tropical fruits from south Florida (red guava, white guava, carambola, red pitaya, white pitaya, mamey, sapodilla, lychee, longan, green mango, ripe mango, and green papaya) were evaluated by ORAC (Oxygen radical absorbance capacity) and DPPH (radical scavenging activity). The antioxidant activities were influenced by cultivar, with good correlations with levels of phenols in methanolic extracts (r=0.96). The phenols, ORAC and DPPH range from 205 to 2316 µg gallic acid equivalent/g puree, 0.02 to 16.94 µmole Trolox equivalent/g puree and 2.08 to 620.18 µg gallix acid equivalent/g puree, respectively. The antioxidant activities evaluated by both ORAC and DPPH showed similar trends where red guava and carambola had the highest and sapodilla and green papaya had the lowest values. Differences were also observed due to variations in the antioxidant constituents of the fruit, reaction kinetics and diffferences in the methods of analysis. |
