Functionalization of hydroxy fatty acids from sophorolipids [abstract]. Annual Meeting and Expo of the American Oil Chemists' Society. p. 64. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Yeasts grown on oil-containing agricultural byproducts such as soy molasses or tallow can produce glycolipids in abundant yields. The chief fatty acid component, after acid hydrolysis, is a C-18 chain hydroxylated at the 17 position. The stearic, oleic, or linoleic variants can be obtained. We are exploring the chemical derivatization of these compounds so that they may find use as building blocks in several fields, from polymers to pharmaceuticals to surfactants. A key strategic goal is to be able to selectively derivatize at three sites: the carboxylic end, the mid-chain olefin, and the hydroxy end. Both amination and oxygenation have been successful. Synthetic routes to a number of poly-hydroxy and amino-hydroxy derivatives will be presented. |
