Interpretive Summary: Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) is a ubiquitous pathogen of cattle. Serotypes of BVDV have not been described but a significant genomic and antigenic heterogeneity has been demonstrated. It has been proposed to use sequences of the 5' UTR for a differentiation of pestivirus species. Genotype II-isolates were associated with a higher virulence causing a fatal hemorrhagic syndrome and significant mortality in cattle. In this study, a BVDV strain was isolated and characterized from cattle with severe symptoms (thrombocytopenia, internal hemorrhages). We confirmed that sequences of the 5' UTR are a useful tool to separate BVDV genotypes, and found that the hemorrhagic syndrome could be correlated with a genotype I-sequence.

Technical Abstract: The Bovine viral Diarrhea virus takes place in numerous pathologies that range from reproductive losses to affections of little clinical significance in the bovine digestive tract. It has been reported variability among the strains of the BVDV, which is expressed by the existence of two biotypes; cytopatogenic (CP) and non cytopathogenic (NCP), and the viral types I and II. This work describes the pathological findings in a calf with diarrhea and severe trombocytopenia. The strain isolated (334/3) was molecularly characterized by sequencing of the 5'non-coding region (5'NCR). These analyses revealed 86.5% homologies with reference strains type I and not changes associated with BVDV type II.
