Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: It is our desire to develop new crosslinking agents for cotton woven, nonwoven, and knitted textiles that afford flame protection regardless of construction. Our first step towards this goal was to design, prepare, and characterize two new epoxy phosphonate crosslinkers. Our next step was to assay their effectiveness to resist flame propagation on treated fabrics of different constructions (plain weave, twill, fleece and carpet) using the modified pill test and the vertical flame test ASTM D6413-99. Thirdly, we tested the extent of char produced by untreated and treated fabrics at 500 degrees Celcius by thermogravimetry (TGA, ref.2) and used the experimental data to estimate the limiting oxygen indices (LOI) of the textiles. In addition to presenting these results, this talk will discuss wrinkle recovery angle data; covalent bonding of crosslinkers on fabrics by proton, carbon-13, and phosphrus-31 NMR; compare the LOI values assessed by TGA with those obtained by ASTM D2863-00; and the effects of laundering on textile flammability and fabric performance (tensile, tear, wrinkle recovery, and flammability). |
