Light-emitting diode equipped insect traps for monitoring pest insect in greenhouses and fields.. Caribbean Food Crops Society Proceedings pp. 106-113. Interpretive Summary: We equipped yellow sticky cards with lime green light emitted diode (LED) clamps that was proved to increase sticky card catches of different species of whitefly adults by 1.3- 4.8X. The blue LED clamps increased blue sticky cards trap catches by 2.0-2.5X. Technical Abstract: Insect traps are vital component of many entomological programs for survey and detection of insect populations. We equipped yellow sticky card (YC) and CC traps with 530 nm lime green light-emitting diodes (LED-YC and LED-CC) and blue sticky card (BC) traps with 470 nm blue LEDs (LED-BC) to increase trap catches of several pest insect pests. The LED-YC traps caught 1.3, 1.4, 1.8, and 4.8 times more adult Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood), sweetpotato whitefly Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) biotype B, Aphis gossypii (Glover), and Bradysia coprophila (Lintner), respectively, compared with standard YC traps in greenhouse studies. The LED-YC traps did not catch more Eretmocerus spp. than the standard YC traps. The LED-CC traps caught 2.5 times B. tabaci compared with standard CC traps. The LED-CC caught few E. erimicus (Rose and Zolnerowich and Encarsia formosa (Gahan) compared with YC traps. The LED-BC traps caught 2.0-2.5 times more adult Franklinella occidentalis (Pergande) compared with the standard BC traps in greenhouse and field studies. |
