Early host response improves disease resistance in channel catfish. Global Aquaculture Advocate. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Bacterial levels and immune response were measured in three ESC-resistant and three ESC-susceptible families of channel catfish. Bacterial levels were suppressed in the resistant families and the non-specific immune response (lysozyme) was activated 24 hours earlier in resistant families than in susceptible families. The delay in immune response may be related to the development of acute infection in susceptible fish, resulting in increased levels of mortality. This information is being incorporated in a selective breeding program for ESC resistance in channel catfish. |
