Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The second edition of James M. Miller’s book Chromatography: Concepts and Contrasts provides an up-to-date overview of current and emerging chromatographic techniques and related issues in a clear and readable fashion. The author did not aspire to describe all topics in an exhaustive depth; he rather composed a concise and versatile reference book intended either as a learning source for chromatography novices or as a refresher and guide to expand the knowledge of practicing chromatographers. Why did the author use the words “concepts” and “contrasts” in the title? The book attempts to present chromatographic techniques in manners that emphasize both their similarities and differences, thus putting different concepts into context with each other and also highlighting their contrasts. When comparing the first and second edition, the second edition expanded by almost 200 pages, which was a result of both inclusions of new chapters and also extensive revisions of the previously published material. In addition to new chapters describing the current developments in chromatography, one section of the book also offers information on industrial and regulatory practices, introducing important players in this arena in the U.S. and worldwide and discussing subjects such as method development and validation, standard operating procedures, or system suitability. The second edition also provides numerous internet resources for chromatographers, reflecting a recent boom in this indispensable source of information. In general, the book is a valuable repository of references (well, at least for the present moment).
