Interpretive Summary: The objective of the paper was to describe the current status of biotechnology applied to animal production in the Americas. Latin America is joining international markets, which will require a change in productivity to be competitive. Biotechnology is an instrument that can be used to increase the quality and quantity of the products it can offer. There are some biotechnological tools that are being used in Latin America on a regular basis. This is the case of artificial insemination in livestock and the production of vaccines. However, there are few efforts to use biotechnological tools constitutively in the region. Most accomplishments in this area stem from localized team efforts. In the United States and Canada, a great support of biotechnology has been achieved. Many accomplishments have been made, and some are currently commercialized. Lack of trained human resources and financial resources limits the successful use of biotechnology in Latin America. However, the countries in the region need to realize the importance of this subject so they can be successful in a global economy.
