Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Salmonella is an important pathogen of humans and animals. One of the most effective treatments for Salmonella infections are beta -lactam antibiotics. However, Salmonella resistant to these antibiotics has been increasing in clinical isolates. To investigate if this increase is also occurring in animals, animal NARMS data was analyzed. Resistance to extended spectrum beta-lactams trended up over most years but may be declining in 2003 data. Investigations are ongoing into the role of cmy-2 AmpC beta -lactamase in Salmonella resistance to beta-lactams.
