Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: The development of rural-based agro-industries is a challenge that is faced by countries throughout the world. In most cases, there are significant obstacles that restrict or impede this development. Financing, marketing, and technology are examples of these obstacles. Private industry and governments have different ways of addressing these problems. Cooperatives were found to be an effective method to address many of the obstacles found with rural employment generation. The experiences of the Virginia Poultry Growers, the Southwest Georgia Escapes, the Agbanga Karite, and the Blue Sun Biodiesel Cooperatives were discussed. Technologies, such as crop simulation models and integrated pest management, can also be used to promote the growth of industries in the rural areas. Feather fiber and tofu waste are some examples of waste products that have been transformed to have additional market value. Rural based food processing in India, Taiwan, and Indonesia are some of the successful examples of employment generation in rural areas. |
