Interpretive Summary: Two restorer (RHA 439 and RHA 440) and one maintainer (HA 441) oilseed sunflower germplasm lines were developed cooperatively and released by the USDA-ARS, Fargo, ND, and the North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station, Fargo, ND. These germplasms are available for use by industry and public researchers to create hybrids, parental lines, or germplasms with improved Sclerotinia head rot resistance. RHA 439 and RHA 440 were derived from crosses between a high yielding, high oil content line developed by USDA and lines derived from France and entered into the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Hybrid Sunflower Yield Trial. HA 441 was derived from a cross between a high yielding, high oil content line developed by USDA and a breeding line developed by INRA, Clermont-Ferrand, France. Sclerotinia tolerance of these lines was evaluated by planting testcross hybrids that were artificially inoculated and placed under a mist irrigation system. The inoculation and mist irrigation was funded through the Sclerotinia Initiative. These lines provide increased genetic diversity to sunflower industry and public improvement programs.
