Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Long-term effects of agricultural practices on the soil microflora have shown that tillage, crop rotation, and residue management significantly influence the size of the microbial biomass, microbial populations, and their activities. Most studies characterizing microbial populations or activities have used random sampling strategies that arbitrarily select spatial and temporal study units. Spatial and temporal dependence of biological systems are particularly important due to the "patchy" distribution of soil organisms as well as soil resources and abiotic variables. Our objective was to quantify and predict the relationships between spatial and temporal patterns of C and N transformations.
