Two new species of Orthapolipus (Acari: Podapolipidae), parasites of Central American Tettigoniidae (Hexapoda:Orthoptera) with a rediagnosis of the genus orthapolipus. International Journal of Acarology. 31(4):355-362. (#183420: December 1, 2005) Interpretive Summary: Katydids cause severe damage on many ornamental, fruit and forest trees. This paper describes two new species of mites that feed on katydids and have potential as biocontrol agents. This study will be important to taxonomists and persons involved in mite systematics, and to integrated pest management and biological control specialists who work on forest and ornamental pests. Technical Abstract: Two new species of podapolipid mites are described from Central American Tettigoniidae, Orthapolipus balboanae n. sp. collected from Balboana tibialis (Wattenwyl) from Costa Rica, and Orthapolipus beeri n. sp. from Microcentrum sp. from Panama. The new species are compared with Orthapolipus nicsarae (Husband, 1988) from the Republic of Palau and O. blattae (Oudemans, 1911) from Indonesia. All Orthapolipus are considered to be parasites of tettigoniid species. Key words - Orthapolipus, Podapolipidae, Tettigoniidae, Costa Rica, Panama, parasites |
