Technical Abstract: Lactobacillus Helveticus is one of 11 lactic acid bacteria (LAB) undergoing structural, functional, and comparative genomic studies by the Lactic Acid Bacteria Genome Consortium and the U.S. Department of Energy’s Joint Genome Institute. L. helveticus is a homofermentative, probiotic, lactic-acid-producing, Gram-positive bacterium, utilized in numerous dairy products, and is amenable to genetic manipulations. These attributes make this bacterium an excellent candidate for functional genomic studies of the “Acidophilus” group of LAB. Full-genome, high-density, photolithography-based, custom arrays of L helveticus were designed, generated, and utilized to perform functional analysis of this bacterium. Gene expression profiles of differing growth conditions, including growth in milk and in a standard rich medium. Data from these experiments will be presented including the identification of one hundred and thirty-four (134) genes induced or repressed (2-fold or greater) during growth in milk compared to growth in a rich medium. |
