Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Objectives: The purpose of this session is to provide information on what is being done by various groups to minimize the public health impact of antibiotic resistant foodborne bacteria and to provide suggestions for future research needs. Participants will: -gain an understanding of the issues surrounding the use of antibiotics in food animals and the relationship to public health, animal health, and food production practices; -acquire a perspective on the development and implementation of judicious antibiotic use guidelines for physicians and veterinarians; -understand the process of microbiological food safety interventions during processing -understand the role of monitoring the antibiotic susceptibility of foodborne pathogens; and -obtain suggestions for research needs that would further minimize the public health impact of antibiotic resistant foodborne bacteria.
