Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: A preliminary weaving trial conducted with a size-free cotton warp yarn on a modern high-speed weaving machine (operating up to 500 picks per minute under mill-like conditions) has produced about 150 yards of a 1/2 twill fabric (64 epi and up to 50 ppi) without any warp yarn failure. Although this certainly is an encouraging, pioneering development to at least demonstrate the "mechanical feasibility" of size-free weaving, the quality of (greige) fabric produced is less than satisfactory, mainly because of occasional formation of unsightly fibrous balls, perhaps due to abrasion or disintegration of the warp yarns. The weaving performance and fabric quality will be discussed in details in the subject paper.
