Interpretive Summary: Since the early 1970's there has been growing concern about the possible adverse effects of stratospheric ozone reduction and the accompanying increase in ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation. In July 2004, a “Symposium on UV Effects on Terrestrial Ecosystems” was organized by the senior author and held at the annual meeting of the American Society for Photobiology in Seattle WA. Following the meeting, participants in the symposium were invited to submit manuscripts on unpublished research for a symposium-in-print on “Ultraviolet Radiation and Terrestrial Ecosystems.” Additional invited manuscripts were also solicited. The present article provides an introduction to the symposium-in-print and summarizes the findings of ten peer-reviewed papers; these articles will be published in the September-October issue of the journal, Photochemistry and Photobiology.

Technical Abstract: This article provides an introduction to a Symposium-in-Print on “Ultraviolet Radiation and Terrestrial Ecosystems”and summarizes the findings of ten papers that were presented at an invited “Symposium on UV Effects on Terrestrial Ecosystems” held at the annual meeting of the American Society for Photobiology in Seattle, WA in July, 2004 or submitted by invited contributors. These papers will be published in the September-October issue of Photochemistry and Photobiology.
