Interpretive Summary: Due to increasing global trade, exotic organisms are being introduced to the United States at an increasing rate. Many become pests or weeds when they become established in new areas free of their normal parasites, predators and diseases. This paper reports the new establishment in the midwestern United States of a species of fly from Europe. It is thought to be a scavenger, but it is reported here to alert regulatory agencies and extension agents to its presence.

Technical Abstract: The establishment of the European playtstomatid species Platystoma seminationis (Fabricius) in the United States is reported. It has been encountered four times during 2003-2005 in the Chicago, Illinois area.
