Orisaltata, a new genus of flea beetles from the Oriental region (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae). Zootaxa. 39-47. Interpretive Summary: Leaf beetles, especially flea beetles, are among the most important insects for U.S. agriculture. Many are serious pests and feed on crops destroying valuable plants. Others are important biological control agents that can be used to kill unwanted and invasive weeds. This work describes a new group of leaf beetles from continental Asia, providing key characters, description, and illustrations for its identification and thus make it available for potential use in biological control projects. This study will be useful to biological control workers, taxonomists, ecologists, and anyone interested in plant-feeding beetles. Technical Abstract: A new genus Orisaltata for Aphthona azurea Jacoby from the Oriental region is described and illustrated. Comparative notes and host plant information are provided. Aphthona babai Kimoto is synonymized with Orisaltata azurea. |
