Revision of the north american aphid genus bipersona hottes (hemiptera: aphididae). Proceedings of the Entomological Society of Washington. 108(4):793-807. Interpretive Summary: Aphids cause millions of dollars of feeding and disease transmission damage to agriculturally important plants. There has been confusion about a group of aphids that feed on thistles and roses throughout the western North America. This paper shows that the species feeding on thistles are different from the species feeding on roses. The species feeding on thistles are re-described and illustrations for identification are provided. This information will be useful to biological control workers and regulatory agencies. Technical Abstract: The aphid genus Bipersona is restricted to western North America and was considered as feeding on thistles and roses. However, current studies determined that the species associated with roses is not congeneric. Futhermore, the previous synonymy of Bipersona torticauda as a junior synonym of Bipersona ochrocentri was erroneous. Both species are valid, redescriptions of the species are made, a neotype for B. ochrocentri and a lectotype and paralectoypes for Bipersona torticauda are designated. Detailed illustrations for both species are presented. |
