Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: A new sugarbeet germplasm development program was initiated in August 2004 by the Agricultural Research Service at the Northwest Irrigation and Soils Research Laboratory, Kimberly, Idaho. The program is focused on developing elite germplasm with enhanced disease resistance and agronomic qualities and improving disease management options. Traditional plant breeding will be combined with the development and use of molecular markers. Our initial targets will be to find, characterize and improve new sources of resistance to curly top and rhizomania. Molecular markers are being developed to simply inherited sources of resistance to Pectobacterium (formerly Erwinia). We will be contributing to the continuing development of genetic linkage maps for Beta which consist of publicly available markers.
