Interpretive Summary: Worldwide, soybean yields are limited by the soybean cyst nematode (SCN). Additionally soybean resistance to several fungal pathogens will improve the yields. Soybean line JTN-5303 was developed and released with the unique combination of high yield, resistance to several predominant nematode populations and resistance to important fungal pathogens. Seed yield from this soybean is significantly higher than a nematode susceptible standard control 5002T and popularly grown cultivar Anand in the mid-south region, which is susceptible to some of the fungal pathogens. The unique combination of traits in this soybean line should improve profits to growers by decreasing losses caused by the nematode and fungal pathogens.

Technical Abstract: Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] germplasm line JTN-5303 is an F6 - derived line from the cross ‘Caviness’ x ‘Anand’. The pedigrees of the parental cultivars Caviness and Anand include, ‘Hutcheson’ x ‘Asgrow 5403’ and ‘Holladay’ x ‘Hartwig’, respectively. The F1 plants were advanced to the F5 via single-pod descent and single plants from F6:7 were selected from the best rows and bulked based on desirable agronomic traits, superior yield and resistance to soybean cyst nematode (Heterodera glycines Ichinohe – SCN). Selection for nematode resistance involved both molecular markers and greenhouse phenotyping with nematode populations. It was evaluated with SCN races (2, 3, 5, 14: corresponding to HG Types 1.2.5.7; 0; 2.5.7; 1.3.6.7, respectively) and was found to be resistant at USDA-ARS, Jackson, TN. Simple sequence repeat markers (SSR) Satt 309, Satt 632, Satt 162 and Satt 082 have confirmed resistance to SCN races. JTN-5303 is resistant to Sudden Death Syndrome, Stem Canker, and frogeye leaf spot. It was found moderately resistant to Charcoal rot but susceptible to root-knot nematode. It is a maturity group V line (relative maturity 5.4) and has determinate growth habit. It has white flowers, tawny pubescence and yellow seeds with imperfect black hila. In Tennessee it was tested in 2002-2004 research trials as well as in USDA Southern Regional Preliminary and Uniform Group V tests. JTN-5303 averaged 3604 kilograms/hectare seed yield, slightly higher than 5002T. It has produced 200 g/kg seed oil, 408 g/kg protein and 15g seed weight (100 seeds), respectively. JTN-5303 has great value as a parent in soybean improvement, especially in the mid-south region, because of its broad resistance to SCN, fungal pathogens and high yield.
