Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Our previous research demonstrated that Pasteuria nishizawae was effective in suppressing Heterodera glycines in microplots. In 1999 we infested a tillage and genetic resistance study with P. nishizawae by adding soil from the microplot study. Soybean yield and the Pi/100 cm3 soil and Pf/Pi of H. glycines were determined from 1999 – 2004. Yield of the resistant variety was greater than the susceptible variety each year. Tillage affected yield in 2000 – 2003, with soybean planted no-till yielding less than soybean planted following tillage. Infestation with P. nishizawae was associated with increased yield only in 2000 and 2001. Determination of Pf/Pi was of minimal value because it did not reflect trends in Pi over time. Numbers of eggs at planting decreased over time on the susceptible variety treated with P. nishizawae, but populations on the resistant variety were low throughout the experiment. In 2004 Pi was 1,860 and 490/100 cm3 soil respectively, for the susceptible variety grown in soil without or in soil with P. nishizawae infestation. For the resistant variety, Pi was 220 and 190/100cm3 soil respectively, in soil not infested or infested with P. nishizawae. Treatment of H. glycines with P. nishizawae resulted in lower Pi on the susceptible variety, but control was not always indicated by increases in yield due in part to confounding by tillage and planting of the resistant variety.
