Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Two BVDV strains isolated from deer and a BVDV strain isolated from pigs were used to inoculate animals from the same species from which they were isolated. Two of the three viruses belonged to the BVDV1b subgenotype while one virus belonged to the BVDV2a subgenotype. No overt clinical disease was observed. However, similar to acute infection of cattle with BVDV, a significant decrease in circulating lymphocytes was noted in all studies. This decrease, which ranged from 40 to 60%, was greatest between 3 and 6 days post inoculation. The decrease in circulating lymphocytes observed in cattle results in immunosuppression in that species. These data suggest that immunosuppression may also occur in non bovine species following acute infection.
