Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Purebred and reciprocal-cross heifers from diallels involving Romosinuano (R), Angus (A), and Brahman (B) (n = 485, born 2002, 2003 and 2004) were used to evaluate direct heterosis and direct and maternal breed effects. Final weight, average daily gain (ADG), total gain, hip height, chute temperament score (1 to 5), exit velocity (meters per second), and body condition score (1 to 9) were analyzed with models to investigate the effects of breed, group, year, dam age, and location of birth as fixed effects and sire within breed as a random term. Heterosis was significant for ADG for A with R (12.0%, 44.6 ± 8.4 g), A with B (25.2%, 98.1 ± 9.0 g), and R with B (17.3%, 63.8 ± 8.0 g). Direct effects for ADG for A, B, and R were 29.4 ± 17.6, 34.8 ± 17.6, and 64.2 ± 16.1 g, respectively, (P < 0.001); maternal effects were generally not significant. Heterosis for final weight ranged from 25.6 ± 3.8 kg (8.1%, A with R) to 54.0 ± 4.1 kg (16.3%, A with B). Final weight direct effects were significant for A (18.7 ± 9.40), B (13.3 ± 9.5 kg) and R (-32.0 ± 8.7 kg). Heterosis for hip height was 29.0 ± 6.9 and 17.3 ± 7.8 cm, respectively, for R with B (2.2%), and B with A (1.3%). Direct effects on hip height were significant for A and B (21.9 ± 14.8 cm, 27.8 ± 14.8 cm, respectively). Heterosis for body condition score was significant for B with R (3.3%, 0.19 ± 0.04) and for A with B (2.1%, 0.13 ± 0.05). R and B direct effects for body condition score were significant (-0.31± 0.10 and 0.36 ± 0.11, respectively). Heterosis effects for chute score were not significant, but heterosis for exit velocity was significant (P < 0.001) for A with R (-6.9%, -0.08 ± 0.01), A with B (-13.6%, -0.15 ± 0.01), and R with B (-11.6%, -0.13 ± 0.01). Direct effects were (-0.04 ± 0.03) for A, (-0.07 ± 0.03) for B, and (0.12 ± 0.03) for R. Romosinuano germplasm may be best utilized as crosses, especially with Brahman, to improve temperament traits.
