Interpretive Summary: Tifrunner is a new peanut variety that is being jointly release by the USDA Agricultural Research Service, and the College of Agriculture & Environmental Sciences of the University of Georgia. Tifrunner is runner market-type in seed and pod size. It has a spreading runner growth habit with an erect mainstem that is prominent throughout the growing season, and at harvest. It has a high level of resistance to tomato spotted wilt virus(TSWV), and moderate resistance to early and late leaf spot. Tifrunner had significantly higher resistance to TSWV than the moderately resistant cultivar, Georgia Green in 13 out of 13 field trials. It is a late maturity class peanut, with about 150 days needed for optimal maturity. Based on seed count per pound, Tifrunner is intermediate between the relatively large seeded cultivar, C-99R, and the relatively small cultivar, Georgia Green. Tifrunner has a pink seed coat with percent meat comparable to other runner cultivars.

Technical Abstract: The Agricultural Research Service, United States Department of Agriculture, and the College of Agriculture & Environmental Sciences of the University of Georgia announce the cultivar release of a new peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.), Tifrunner. This line has resistance to both tomato spotted wilt virus and leaf spot. Tifrunner originated from a cross of F439-16-10-3 and PI 203396. F439-16-10-3 is a component line of the cultivar, Florunner. The original population was advanced to the F4 using single seed descent. Individual F4 plants were harvested and the population was subjected to selection pressure for yield, grade, and for resistance to late leaf spot and tomato spotted wilt for the next three generations. Tifrunner is a runner market-type in seed and pod size. It has a spreading runner growth habit with an erect main stem that is prominent throughout the growing season, and at harvest. Flowers are not present on the main stem, and this line belongs to A. hypogaea subspecies hypogaea var. hypogaea. It has a high level of resistance to tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV), and moderate resistance to early (Cercosporidium arachidicola Hori) and late (Cercosporidium personatum Berk. & M. A. Curtis) leaf spot. It is a late maturity class peanut, with about 150 days needed for optimal maturity. Based on seed count per pound, Tifrunner is intermediate between the relatively large seeded cultivar, C-99R, and the relatively small seeded cultivar, Georgia Green. Tifrunner has a pink testa (seed coat) with percent meat comparable to other runner cultivars. Seed for this release will be deposited in the National Plant Germplasm System where it will be available for research purposes, including development and commercialization of new material.
