Registration of Strong-Rps soybean germplasm with Phytophthora stem and root rot resistance. Journal of Plant Registrations. 2:143-145. Interpretive Summary: Strong-Rps is a new semi-dwarf soybean germplasm developed jointly by the USDA-Agricultural Research Service and the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center (OARDC) at Wooster, OH. This germplasm carries Rps1-a and Rps1-k gene for resistance to several races of Phytophthora sojae (including race 1, 4 and 7) in the high-yielding genetic background of cultivar Strong. Phytophthora stem and root rot causes the second biggest yield loss of soybean in the North Central soybean growing region of the USA. Strong-Rps was developed specifically to add mutli-race resistance to Phytophthora stem and root rot in the high-yielding semi-dwarf background of cultivar Strong. Strong-Rps has the same yield potential as the recurrent parent Strong. It has almost same relative maturity, lodging score, plant height, seed size and seed quality, and protein and oil contents as those of Strong. Like Strong, Strong-Rps has white flower, tawny pubescence, tan pods, and dull yellow seed with black hilum. This new germplasm will be useful for soybean breeders and researchers with interest in multi-race resistance to Phytophthora stem and root rot in a semi-dwarf genomic background. Technical Abstract: Strong-Rps soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.]) germplasm line was developed jointly by the USDA-Agricultural Research Service and the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center (OARDC) at Wooster, OH. It was released in December 2005, because it carries Rps1-a and Rps1-k gene for resistance to several races of Phytophthora sojae (including P. sojae race 1, 4 and 7) in the high-yielding genetic background of cultivar Strong. Strong-Rps was developed in Ohio by backcrossing the Rps1-k gene from cultivar Sprite 87 into the high yielding maturity group IV determinate semi-dwarf cultivar Strong. Strong-Rps was developed specifically to add mutli-race resistance to Phytophthora stem and root rot in the high-yielding semi-dwarf background of cultivar Strong. Strong-Rps was yield tested in high yielding irrigated fields in Wooster, Ohio for three years (2002, 2003, and 2004). In these tests Strong-Rps had similar yields as cultivar Strong. In 2003, Strong-Rps was entered in the Regional Uniform Test IV (UT-IV) and averaged over 15 locations, it yielded the same as cultivar Strong. It has almost same relative maturity, lodging score, plant height, seed size and seed quality, and protein and oil contents as those of Strong. Like Strong, Strong-Rps has white flower, tawny pubescence, tan pods, and dull yellow seed with black hilum. |
