Genomic organization of major hessian fly (mayetiola destructor) resistance genes in wheat [abstract]. Meeting Abstract. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: The use of resistance genes in wheat has been the most effective way to control the Hessian fly [Mayetiola destructor (Say)], one of the most destructive pests of wheat. So far 32 Hessian fly resistance genes (H) have been identified. Molecular mapping using various markers revealed that most of the resistance genes are clustered within short chromosome regions. These clusters are located on chromosomes 1AS, 1DS, 6DS, and 3DL, respectively. Marker saturation and BAC finger-printing allowed us to construct BAC contigs that contain specific Hessian fly resistance gene clusters. Several candidates with specific characteristics have been identified. Gene silencing of these candidates will allow us to confirm these resistance genes and analyze specific mechanisms. |
