Trash measurements in ginned cotton. In: Proceedings of the Beltwide Cotton Conferences, January 3-6, 2006, San Antonio, Texas. 2006 CDROM. p. 1926-1937. Interpretive Summary: Currently there are no commercially available systems in the cotton industry for non-intrusive and on-line (real-time) measurements of trash objects in cotton. Such on-line trash measurements will be of significant importance for process control in cotton gins and textile processing plants. The Cotton Trash Identification System developed at the Southwestern Cotton Ginning Research Laboratory is evaluated for identification and categorization of trash objects in ginned cotton for real-time measurements. The systems are evaluated for repeatable and reliable trash measurements. The systems’ total, trash, and dust count measurements are compared with the Advanced Fiber Information System and High Volume Instrument-Trashmeter measurements. Cotton Trash Identification systems measurements of percent trash and trash count of Trash Under Glass samples developed by the Agricultural Marketing Service are compared to High Volume Instrument measurements. Technical Abstract: This paper discusses the identification of trash objects in cotton using machine vision based systems. The Cotton Trash Identification System developed at the Southwestern Cotton Ginning Research Laboratory is evaluated for identification and categorization of trash objects in ginned cotton. One of the major research goals is to develop a system for non-intrusive and on-line (real-time) measurements of trash objects for process control in cotton gins and textile processing plants. The systems are evaluated for repeatable and reliable trash measurements. The systems’ total, trash, and dust count measurements are compared with the Advanced Fiber Information System and High Volume Instrument-Trashmeter measurements. Trash area measurements from the Cotton Trash Identification System are compared with Advanced Fiber Information System, High Volume Instrument-Trashmeter, High Volume Instrument-Agricultural Marketing Service, and Shirley Analyzer trash area measurements. Cotton Trash Identification systems measurements of percent trash and trash count of Trash Under Glass samples developed by the Agricultural Marketing Service are compared to High Volume Instrument measurements. The Cotton Trash Identification System scanner based system measurements correlate with High Volume Instrument measurements on Trash Under Glass boxes for percent trash and trash count. |
