Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: A huge amount of oxytetracycline (OTC) is used in aquaculture worldwide. Since it is poorly absorbed by the gastrointestinal system and has a relatively long lifetime, it is necessary to study its occurrence, distribution, transport, and fate in the associated environmental waters, its impact on the biosphere, and its treatment. Specific and sensitive field instrumentation and methodology are essential to carry out these tasks. We have developed a portable, TC-specific analyzer based on europium-sensitized luminescence. In this study it was used to analyze OTC in surface water. Without enrichment a 0-2 ppm linear dynamic range (LDR) (r(2) = 0.994) was achieved with a 0.27-ppb limit of detection (LOD). One to three orders-of-magnitude improvement in sensitivity is achieved with SPE enrichment using 3M Empore C18 disks. Both the method and instrument are simple, rapid, low-cost, and field deployable, providing needed sensitivity and throughput for aquacultural and environmental monitoring.
