Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Our objective is to improve the mechanical properties of zein films by reacting zein, a prolamine of corn, dissolved in acetic acid with varying amounts of glutaraldehyde (GDA) from 0.5 to 16%. Air dried films from these solutions were evaluated for thermal properties with thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), differential calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and mechanical properties with Instron. Data from TGA and DSC analyses were used to support rheological findings with DMA. GDA reaction with zein generated films with improved tensile strength, ductility and stiffness when compared with zein control films.
