Technical Abstract: Since an enormous amount of biosolids is land applied (4.5 million tons/year), the safety and quality of biosolids especially in terms of endocrine disrupting compounds EDCs) and odors of the solids as well as pathogens, have become important issues to the public as well as to biosolids managers. In this study, ferrate (VI), which was produced with a pilot scale on-site ferrate producer (called FerratorTM), has been applied to address the issues related to EDCs (i.e., nonylphenol ethoxylates, octylphenol ethoxylates and polybrominated biphenyl ethers), odors, and pathogens of biosolids. In short, the experiments with ferrate (VI) showed very promising result. With its strong oxidizing power, it could significantly reduce the level of the EDCs of interest and microbial counting with dose of 200-800 mg Fe/kg wet solids. Also the oxidant could significantly improve the odor characteristics of biosolids at medium dose; at high dose, odor quality did not improve. |
