Taxonomy of solanum sections nemorense and aculeigerum [abstract]. Solanaceae International Congress Proceedings. p. 195. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Sections Nemorense Child and Aculeigerum (S. wendlandii group) of the genus Solanum are monographed. Species of section Nemorense grow in wet to moist forests and range from lowlands of the Amazon Basin in Brazil to the eastern Andes of Ecuador, Colombia, Peru, and Bolivia. A monograph of section Nemorense treats four species and is differentiated from other sections by long attenuate anthers, equal filaments, unbranched inflorescences, leaves that are either compound or simple (i.e., not confluent) and sympodia units that are unifoliate or defoliate. Section Aculeigerum is a vicariant group with seven species: five in Mexico and Central America, one in Ecuador, and one in southeastern Brazil. They grow in forests, forest edges, secondary thickets and middle to low elevations. A monograph of section Aculeigerum treats seven species and is differentiated from other sections by oblong anthers, heterandry (marked unequal anthers and stamens within the same flower), plurifoliate sympodia, branched inflorescences, vine-like habit, and confluent leaves. The presence of sharp prickles is independently derived in section Aculeigerum and perhaps in section Nemorense. A preliminary phylogeny based on molecular sequence data is presented showingthe phylogenetic placement of these two sections relative to the other major groups of Solanum subgenus Leptostemonum. |
