Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Perhaps the most important factor with respect to the development and expansion of US marine finfish culture operations is the establishment and maintenance of healthy broodstock animals. To achieve successful and sustained production of seedstock for ongrowing operations, proper broodstock husbandry and management procedures must be implemented. Key areas of importance regarding broodstock husbandry and management include: 1) acquisition and quarantine procedures, 2) feed training and subsequent nutrition and feeding strategies, 3) tagging and inventory methods, 4) system operation and management, and 5) photothermal manipulation to achieve natural and hormone-induced spawning. Specific information on each of these areas will be presented and will include the authors’ personal experience with various species including Florida pompano Trachinotus carolinus, cobia Rachycentron canadum, black sea bass Centropristis striata, southern flounder Paralicthys lethostigma, red drum Sciaenops ocellatus, and red snapper Lutjanus campechanus.
