Interpretive Summary: Effective methods of monitoring adult Asian citrus psyllid are needed for developing IPM strategies. Growers need effective methods of monitoring adult psyllids for making management decisions. Studies were conducted to compare yellow sticky card traps, blue sticky card traps, Multi-Lure traps, and CC traps (red, blue, black, white, yellow, and green) for monitoring adult Asian citrus psyllid in citrus. The Multi-Lure trap is useful for monitoring some fruit fly species in citrus. The CC trap is useful for monitoring some thrips species but had not been investigated in citrus. Neither trap type had been investigated for potential for monitoring Asian citrus psyllid. We also investigated a tapping method for monitoring adult psyllids. Yellow sticky card traps were most effective in terms of attracting and catching large numbers of psyllids, and blue sticky cards were next most effective. Yellow and blue sticky cards were equally effective in detecting the presence of adults in trees (95% or better). The CC and Multi-Lure traps appeared to have no value for monitoring the psyllid. Tap sampling was relatively easy to conduct and provided relatively good detection levels of adults (85% or better). Research to develop protocols for sticky trap and tap sampling would be advantageous.

Technical Abstract: Studies were conducted at two different field sites to compare yellow sticky card traps, blue sticky card traps, Multi-Lure traps, and CC traps (red, blue, black, white, yellow, and green) for monitoring adult Asian citrus psyllid, Diaphorina citri Kuwayama,in citrus. The Multi-Lure trap is useful for monitoring some fruit fly species in citrus. The CC trap is useful for monitoring some thrips species but had not been investigated in citrus. Neither trap type had been investigated for potential for monitoring D. citri. In the studies we present, the Multi-Lure and CC traps were charged with either ethylene glycol or a dichlorvos kill strip. We also investigated a tapping method for monitoring adult D. citri. Significantly greater numbers of adult D. citri were collected at yellow sticky card traps than at blue sticky cards. Blue sticky cards captured significantly greater numbers of adults that any of the Multi-Lure or CC traps. Yellow and blue sticky cards were equally effective in detecting the presence of adult D. citri in trees given the infestation levels present at the two study sites. The CC and Multi-Lure traps captured so few adult psyllids and provided numerically such low levels of percentage detection of adults that they appeared to have no value for monitoring D. citri. Tap sampling was relatively easy to conduct and provided relatively good detection levels of adults given the infestation levels present at the two groves. Data from tap sampling indicated that there were no significant differences in mean numbers of adult psyllids among trees assigned the different types of traps. Research to develop protocols for sticky trap and tap sampling would be advantageous.
