An Abridged Glossary of Terms Used in Invertebrate Pathology, 3rd Edition. Society of Invertebrate Pathology. Available: http://www.sipweb.org/glossary. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: This new edition added approximately 400 terms and doubled the size of the glossary. More than 40 definitions were expanded and improved over those in the Second Edition, and fewer than 30 terms that are no longer used or are too general were deleted from this glossary. A major goal was to emphasize terms that contemporary scientists would need to know to understand not only modern publications but also literature published before 1970. The definitions for fewer than 100 terms were given as verbatim quotes (with publishers' permissions) from three published sources. Multiple definitions recognizing different applications of terms by different disciplines included under the broader concept of invertebrate pathology were included. The additions to this glossary since the publication of the 2nd edition (1970) represent a remarkable extent of the transformation of the current state of knowledge in all subdisciplines contributing to invertebrate pathology and, most especially, to those advances due directly to the invention and rise to central importance of molecular and DNA-based approaches to biological progress. |
