Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: This Special issue contains papers based on the contributions presented during the workshop “Current Knowledge on the Layer Charge of Clay Minerals”, held on September 18 and 19, 2004, in the Smolenice Castle, Slovakia. Layer charge is one of the most important characteristics of clay minerals as it strongly influences the function of clay minerals in geological, environmental, and industrial system. The workshop was sponsored and supported by the Integrated Center for Advanced Materials and Molecular Research of the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry of Slovak Academy of Sciences, IIC-MATMOL (project G5MA-CT-2002-04051 of the 5th Framework program of EU).
