Citation: Norrbom, A.L., Korytkowski, C.A. 2007. New species and new synonymy, and taxonomic notes in the Anastrepha schausi group (Diptera: Tephritidae). Zootaxa. 1497:47-55.

Interpretive Summary: The family of true fruit flies includes numerous major agricultural pests throughout the world. The majority of species that are pests in the American tropics and subtropics, and that threaten fruit industries in the southern United States, belong to a large genus that contains more than 200 species. Precise taxonomic data are necessary to recognize the pest species. In this paper, a species from Panama is recognized and described for the first time. Another species in which males and females have different wing and body markings is redescribed. Two names, one based on the male, the other on the female, have been used for this species but are shown to be synonyms. Identification tools (descriptions and illustrations) are provided for both species. The ability to recognize them is essential to regulatory and quarantine agencies to prevent the spread of pest species. The information provided will also be valuable to scientists studying the biology and control of these species.

Technical Abstract: Anastrepha fuscicauda Norrbom & Korytkowski, new species, is described from Panama. Anastrepha bellicauda Norrbom is considered a new junior synonym of A. lutea Stone.
