Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: This study presents a conceptual platform in the effort to study stomatal reaction of corn plants as a function of water status. The model was developed by combining a two dimensional soil model (2DSOIL) and a corn model (MAIZESIM). Transport of water through the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum is simulated. Different mechanisms are implemented in the model to simulate the reaction of stomatal conductance to radiation level, temperature, vapor pressure deficit, soil moisture level, and soil temperature. Root/leaf water potential and ABA concentration in root/leaf were assumed to be two principle signal transducers for drought stress in the corn plant. This study implemented the hydraulic mechanism and the hormone mechanism in simulating corn stomatal reaction to drought stress. The results showed that both mechanisms were able to simulate the trend in leaf water potential and stomatal conductance of corn plants under drought stress. The applicability of different mechanisms was examined with data collected in the corn field and sunlit SPAR (Soil-Plant-Atmosphere Research) controlled environment chambers.
