Comparison of 2005 and 2006 Phakopsora pachyrhizi spore rain trap data. In: Plant Management Network. Annual APS Soybean Rust Meeting, St. Louis, Mo, November 29 - December 1, 2006. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: In 2005 and 2006, rain was collected weekly at over 100 selected National Atmospheric Deposition Program (NADP) sites across the eastern and central US, from North Dakota to Texas, and Florida to New York. Rain samples were filtered and screened for Phakopsora pachyrhizi (Asian soybean rust fungal) DNA using a nested real-time PCR assay. The assay was used to screen over 1,500 samples collected from May-August in both 2005 and 2006. The temporal distribution was similar between the years, with the number of positive samples increasing through May and early June, decreasing in mid to late June and into July, and increasing again through August. However, there was a three-fold increase in the number of samples testing positive for P. pachyrhizi in 2006. In addition, the results indicate that there was an increase in the spore load in 2006 compared to 2005. This year, P. pachyrhizi DNA was detected in every state in the study region except for North Dakota. Annual APS Soybean Rust Meeting, St. Louis, MO. November 29 - December 1, 2006. |
