Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Abstract: A history of the establishment of the Fish Health Section, the first section of the American Fisheries Society, and the first five years of its operation (1973 to 1977) is given. Jim Warren, a USFWS biologist stationed at Genoa, Wisconsin, was the driving force behind the formation of the Section. Other shakers and movers of the section along with issues that were important in the fish disease community in the early to mid 1970s are discussed. Some of these issues involved the certifying of fish pathologists, establishing disease classification standards, updating fish bacterial nomenclature, using depopulation as a disease control method, promoting uniform federal legislation, and increasing membership. The early accomplishments of the Section included the publication of the first “Blue Book” (a manual for the identification and detection of fish pathogens), the development of protocols for certifying fish health inspectors, the completion of the “Glossary of Fish Health Terms,” and the establishment of a committee on fish bacterial nomenclature. The Section published four yearly newsletters and began to hold biennial meetings. |
